A Triangle ABA behavioral assessment is a structured, BCBA-led process, commonly known as a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), that identifies exactly why a specific challenging behavior is happening and what to do about it. Unlike a diagnostic evaluation, which answers “does my child have autism?”, a behavioral assessment answers “why is my child doing this, and how do we change it?” The result is a written report plus a concrete Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) your family, school, or ABA team can actually implement.
Your BCBA starts by gathering context from the people who see the behavior most, you, other caregivers, teachers, siblings when appropriate, and any prior providers. We use validated rating scales (FAST, MAS, QABF) alongside structured interviews to build a complete history: when the behavior started, how it’s changed, what’s been tried, and what the behavior “earns” or “avoids” for your child.
The BCBA observes your child in the environments where the behavior happens, clinic, home, or school, and collects ABC data: the Antecedent (what happens right before), the Behavior itself (precisely defined), and the Consequence (what happens right after). Patterns in ABC data reveal the function of the behavior, typically one of four: attention, escape/avoidance, access, or sensory/automatic reinforcement.
If indirect and descriptive assessment don’t produce a clear function, your BCBA conducts a controlled functional analysis, systematically testing hypothesized functions in a safe setting to confirm exactly what’s reinforcing the behavior. This is the most rigorous behavioral science has to offer, and it’s the difference between a guess and a confirmed answer.
